Humus
the matter that feeds the soil…
the people that feed the gardener…
the gardener who feeds the soil…
Every person we interact with early in our career has a disproportionately large impact on how we view our job and our work. For me, the first year in horticulture felt like falling in love over and over again. Every new person liked the things I liked, and were really good at the things I wanted to be good at. In time, I’ve come to fall in love with gardeners and plantspeople as a whole. We work for little money, on a planet in crisis, in sometimes unrecognised roles. Yet - some of the most passionate, knowledgable and excited people remain in this industry. The women I meet, particularly, model how I see my career developing, I’ve taken some portraits of some of them, which I’ve shared below. Each time I work with a new mentor or visit a new garden I am inspired and enriched, fed from the complex and churning mix of people who fall into this work.
